the name behind the blog
I'm passionate about design, labels, branding and most importantly, storytelling. As a marketer, its a big part of what I do and I truly believe that anyone who calls themselves a marketer, needs to know how to tell a story, no matter the application.
I love hearing about the story behind a great brand or name, and I've recently had a few people ask, "where does the name Lemons for Love come from?" (and no, its not because I have an obsessed for lemons....but I do like them:)
I'm glad you asked, cause there's a great story behind that.
When I decided to come to my senses and realized I needed to move to Grande Prairie, my first reaction was (a) I need a plan on how this will all shake out and (b) I need to do something of value and figure out a way to make my own path in a city where I was starting this new life. I thought about doing a blog but wasn't convinced this was the right direction for me. So many blogs already existed and my Instagram feed was consistently blowing up with photoshoot after staged photoshoot of the same stuff, and it really started to all look the same to me. But I've always wanted my own platform to communicate on, share my experiences - as flawed, experimental, challenging and funny as they are - with my audience. You know who you are:) Yes, that's you.
In addition, I've always loved the story and concept behind the movie Julie & Julia, where a career-stalled thirty-something took it upon herself to blog about her experience as she cooked her way through Julia Child's ENTIRE Mastering The Art of French Cooking. It was funny, interesting, inspiring, REAL, vulnerable and very flawed...but in a good way.
So, as many great conversations go with my girlfriends, they are often a great source of inspiration. This is where lemons for love was initially started.
I was walking on the seawall with my dear friend Christina and I asked her about how her big move to Vernon, BC went, shortly after she got married many moons ago, what she did, how she found her footing and created something she was proud of. I will never forget what she said, "well my husband was thriving and growing in his career and I just did my thing, you know, turning lemons into fucking gold". Ding ding! It was like a lightbulb went off. I believe Oprah would call this an "ah-ha moment!". The old adage lemons into lemonade, translated to lemons into fucking gold (if anyone knows me, this sort of language resonates with me well:)...you get the point. It made sense to me, but I needed to associate the idea of turning lemons into lemonade with the ultimate reason why I was making this huge transition - for love.
Fast forward to another conversation with another great, talented group of ladies and Lemons for Love was born (kudos to Kim for nailing that one). It just spoke to me. It was cute, feminine, made sense to me, spoke to my purpose of even starting a blog and at the end of the day, I could see it having a long life online.
So there you have it - the story behind the name, Lemons for Love. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I do.
