hello.

This is a simple, everyday blog about the things that make me tick. Welcome to my new adventure.

the art of friendship

the art of friendship

Surround yourself with people who make you hungry for life, touch your heart, and nourish your soul. - Unknown

I've always said, if there's one thing I've done well in life, its that I've surrounded myself with some amazing friends. I've been so very fortunate to have met each and every one of them at various stages in my life. Through the highs, lows, challenges, breakthroughs, heartbreaks, celebrations and accomplishments, we have supported each other through it all. Very willingly.

It's no wonder my favourite TV show of all time was Sex and the City. I didn't love it just for the provocative nature, the humour, the high fashion, the New York City lifestyle or raunchy dialogue. I loved it because of the very real bond between the four characters - Carrie, Samantha, Miranda & Charlotte. No matter what happened in their lives, they stuck together, they supported each other through the thick and the very thin. And they invested in the friendship just as any long-lasting relationship desires.

Most recently, because I am literally packing up my life and leaving this great city of Vancouver for a new life up North, I was fortunate to have some of my nearest and dearest friends gathered in one room to send me off with style. And they did.....along with some tears, hugs, inspiring words and lots of love. Oh there was lots of love.

It was exactly what I wanted. Amazing women gathered together, catching up, enjoying some vino, good food and great company. And at one point in the evening when I was thanking everyone for coming (and going into the ugly cry), I realized that the women in that room were all chapters in my book of life, since moving to Vancouver at the ripe (and bratty) age of 13.  Coming to Vancouver was the third big move my family made, so you can imagine how difficult it was to be this prepubescent teen, hormones raging and being told you're moving across the country, yet again. I had been through this before and it was absolutely horrible. And I had two fears: leaving all my friends behind in Toronto,  and will I make any new ones? Like really great ones?

We might think all of our traits and life decisions can be traced back to our genes or the influence of our parents or partners, but it has become increasingly clear to me that our peers are stealth sculptors of everything from our basic linguistic habits to our highest aspirations. And while friendships are a staple in most of our lives, very few of us are fully aware of the effect friends have on our personal growth & happiness.

So as I stood there that evening I was proud of myself because I chose all these ladies to go through life's ups and downs with, and they chose me. For that, I am forever grateful. I felt I accomplished what many people often chase after - quality friendships and a bond with some of the smartest, sincerest, kindest, most supportive women I know.
