CONTRIBUTED // find direction by figuring out how you feel

I just heard this great quote from Steve Jobs:

You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.

In my life, the dots have always made sense looking backwards. But trusting that where you are now, and that this is all happening for a reason that will make sense at some point in the future is a lot harder to get behind, particularly if you're at a crossroads and the path forward is no longer clear to you.

Here's the good news: even if you don't know how or where you are going in your life, there are some things that you can know, and that is how you want to feel in your life. And knowing how you want to feel can be a great starting point in giving your life direction.

So how does this work? What if your future self could write you a letter and let you know how life
worked out? What would you like to know? How about…..

  • What did you achieve in the broader sense?

  • Who is still with you and why?

  • What really mattered and what didn’t?

  • Is there anything you wished you had done differently?

  • What did your life look like?

  • What would be the best advice your older self could tell you?

  • How did it make you feel?

Figuring out how you want to live your life speaks to what is important to you, your values, and once you know this, you can start to get more specific on where to go next.

So don’t worry about your next step, even if it is not the right step, it is still a learning opportunity which will take you one step closer to realizing what you really want and it will, in the end, make sense when you connect the dots!
